seeds are amazing!

A seed is the part of the plant that grows into a new plant. There are many different kinds of seeds. Some seeds are big, like a coconut. And some are tiny, like the seeds of a lettuce.

Do you know where most seeds like to grow? Down in the soil! Most seeds need to be planted in the soil to germinate and grow.

All the information that a plant needs to know about itself is in its seed. It’s like a code that tells the plant if it will turn into a carrot or a giant eucalypt tree. Amazing!

how to plant a seed

Have you planted seeds before? Here’s how I plant a seed. It only takes a minute!

You can print this activity sheet out, cut out the pictures and have a go at placing the pictures in the right order. You could stick them in your scrapbook.

the planting song

Here’s a song that I love to sing when I’m planting seeds in my garden. And now it’s your planting song too! Sing along with me!

Make a little hole, put a seed in it, cover it up with dirt, it only takes a minute.

seed saving for kids

Did you know that you can save your own seeds from the plants in your garden?!

You can collect the seeds all up, save them in a container and when the season is right, you can plant them and they will grow more plants. Click on the picture below to find out how.

nature detective mission

Here’s your take away mission … next time you plant a seed in your garden or even a pot plant, take a picture or make a video.

You can post a pic or video to social media. Use the hashtags #dirtgirlworld #iamoutside to make sure I discover it! Or you can post it on the Kinderling Kids Radio and dirtgirlworld Facebook pages. Just check with your grown-ups first, as different families have different rules for social media and we are totally cool with that.
