dirtgirlworld survived the fires!
Dear tribe
November was a really hard month all across the nation bushfires burned out of control. We also had a bushfire in dirtgirlworld. We were ringed by fires for a couple of weeks and as the fires approached we were evacuated on Nov 21.
For many days the NSW Rural fire service protected and cared for dirtgirlworld. They even had time to post messages on our facebook page so we knew what was going on.
It was so touching and a beacon of humanity in such challenging circumstances, as our natural-estate burns and lives, homes and livelihoods are threatened .
That image is just the beginning of the story of kindness that has involved a group of grown-ups protecting the world that their children and grandchildren love and are connected to.
It also stared a flow of selfies, fire truck pics and notes of love to the families on our Facebook page updating them on how we were fairing.
There’s a lot of happy news here.
We are home now. It’s a very strange feeling. We are so happy and grateful to see our home but so sad to see how nature is suffering.
As we all saw on that incredible drone footage of the fire at dirtgirlworld.. behind my house is burnt. Behind scrapboy’s house is burnt. The mound, our potting up area and edge of our garden is scorched. The incredible news is that our homes and our garden were saved!
And I say saved because that is what happened... it was saved. Not lucky , not missed by fire ... saved. The fire came very very close to my house…close to the chicken house ( the chickens were not there). The fire was fierce and accounts are that dirtgirlworld shouldn’t have survived but it did…because it was saved!
Of course we are holding space for everyone still threatened by fire and for all the families who have lost their homes and for all the creatures that we have lost or who are also homeless.
Here are some pictures for you to see what happened .
Here you can see the drone footage of dirtgirlworld being water bombed and protected from the fires.
How close?…very close!... the fire was stopped 1 metre from here
On the day, on the ground, it was the firefighters and helicopter pilots, our neighbours, the local community and emergency workers that saved dirtgirlworld.
The big stars were the NSW Rural Fire Service.
They fought to save us, they defended and channelled the fire around us... they bombarded it with water
How do you say thank you for that.
Well firstly, you say it.
To every person who saved our world we say with all our hearts….THANK YOU!
The kindness and determination to save dirtgirlworld is overwhelmingly.
The humbling thing is that the RFS , communities, neighbours, emergency services and strangers stand together over and over to protect, to care, to save….time and time again.
They have moved now from saving our world to the many other places that are threatened by fires across the country.
As Costa the green Gnome says . This is a very real reminder of the wonderful heart and spirit that exists out on the front line. Our fire services are made up of individuals , local and from far away in many cases who care about the challenges they face and who know that this is people’s lives, livelihoods and histories they are immersed in .
So to all the our crew and all the other fire fighters, volunteers, support staff , and individuals and teams : Mums and dads, all people, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, nanas and poppas all around the country thank you for the care and love you put into the challenge faced by so many communities. You are the priceless values of community care in action and in real time.
And THANK YOU to all of you all for holding space with us over the last weeks. Your love and support helped sustain us.
We are a resilient tribe here in dirtgirlworld. We are getting ready, as soon as it rains, to replant the forest and grow homes for the creatures who share our world and to do the important job of being the earth's lungs.
Stay tuned, we have more exciting news come up!
REgener8
Our new project … helping small schools and communities impacted by the bushfires
In response to the recent fires we are launching a project called REgener8.
We are currently seeking funding and support to connect to 8 small schools in our region, who have been heavily impacted by the bush fire,to work with them on post disaster regeneration.
