Map challenge (Go Wild for Maths!)
Hi greenthumbs. It’s dirtgirl here!
It’s Go Wild for Maths challenge time! Your challenge is to make a map of a tree.
Spend some time with a tree and make a map of all your discoveries.

Watch the ‘Map Challenge’ episode on ABC iview to see how to make your map.
what you need to gather
Before you start, you’ll need to gather the following things:
2-3 pieces of paper
a clipboard (or make your own with some thick cardboard and a peg!)
pencils and crayons
string
a magnifying glass
a camera.
what to do outside
Go for a nature walk in your neighbourhood and choose a special tree to map.
Gather information about your tree including the width of the trunk, type of bark, branches, leaves, flowers and seedpods. Draw, write and take photos!
Count and record the location of any nests, birds or insects in the tree.
Measure around the trunk of the tree using your string.
Collect some leaves from the tree and any bark, sticks or seedpods that have fallen to the ground.
how to create your map
There’s no one way to do this challenge, but here are some ideas to get you started!
Find a quiet place to sit, away from the traffic. Draw a map of your tree (a picture) based on all the information you’ve collected.
Add in any nests, birds or insects that were in your tree. You could also add a table next to your picture with the name of each thing and a count of how many you saw.
To decorate your tree map, you could add some leaf rubbings by placing the paper over a leaf and rubbing over it gently with the side of a crayon.
Give your tree map a name and write the date at the top of the page. If you know what type of tree it is, write that too!
Don’t forget to snap a photo of your finished tree map!
When you’ve finished, pack up all of your things and take them home. You can place the objects from the tree back in nature, or you might like to take them home with you.
did you know?
Some trees can grow to over 100 metres tall!
