There’s also something to colour in, a poster to make and videos to watch.

a letter from dirtgirl

the un-grubby club

Did you notice my big bubbly bath at the end of the video?!

After a big day of getting grubby, I have a bath with warm water and soap. I wash my hands and face so they are all clean.

In dirtgirlworld, we call this getting “un-grubby”!! It’s a super important part of being a greenthumb! Hands up if you want to join my un-grubby club?!!

handwashing rocks!

To be part of my un-grubby club, you just need to wash your hands!

If you remember to wash your hands and your face with warm water and soap, it can help you and your community stay healthy – which means more time for playing and making things and having fun!

Washing your hands properly helps get rid of germs.

We can also stop germs spreading by remembering to sneeze and cough into our elbows (and not our hands).

When is it time to wash our hands?

We wash our hands before touching food, after going to the toilet, after blowing our nose, after touching animals or after playing outside in the dirt or garden.

We also need to wash our hands after changing bub’s nappy or looking after sick people.

Clean hands are caring hands!

no germs on me!

Let’s discover more about germs!

Fact 1:
Germs are tiny!

You can’t see them even when they are on your hands – they are INVISIBLE! Amazing! The only way you can see them is by looking at them under a microscope like a scientist.

Fact 2:
Germs LOVE to travel.

They get passed around by coughing and sneezing into our hands or by touching our faces with dirty hands.

Fact 3:
Some germs can make us sick.

They can make us feel tired, give us a sore throat, make our eyes sore or make us feel all hot and sweaty which isn’t much fun.

But you have a superpower!

You can help stop the spread of germs by washing your hands!

mission chart

Calling all greenthumbs! Your mission is to see how many activities on the flower you can do.

Print this sheet out. Once you’ve have finished an activity, colour in the petal. See how many petals you can colour in. I call this petal power!

challenge: wash your hands like a superhero

Follow these 5 steps to wash your hands like a super-hero!

Remember to rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds. Wash the backs, the palms, in-between the fingers and your wrists.

And don’t forget to turn off the tap! This saves any water going to waste. Every little drop of water is precious.

To become a super-hero hand-washer, you need to sing a song while you wash your hands!

If you already know a handwashing song, you could sing that. Or you could sing the intro song from my get grubby tv show like I do.

Or, you could sing this happy handwashing song to the tune of the “happy birthday” song.

“Wash the germs down the drain
Wash the germs down the drain
Scrub your hands with soap and water
Make them all clean again."

(sing it TWICE to the tune of "happy birthday")

The main thing to remember is that your song needs to go for at least 20 seconds!

dirtgirl’s top 5 tips

Going outside and getting grubby is one of my favourite things to do. Here are my 5 tips for going outside.

scavenger hunt

One of my favourite things to do is to go outside on a scavenger hunt.

You could make some mud paint and mud stencils. This is a fun grubby activity to do outside! Don’t forget to wash your hands with soap and warm water when you are finished. You will need to ask a grown-up for help to cut out the stencils.

toy wash

A toy wash is a super fun activity to do on a hot day. Put some soap or bubbles in the tub!

play it safe

Right now, we are keeping our distance from each other, so we don’t spread any nasty germs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we do things for a while. It’s not forever, but it is for now. It’s just a new way of hanging out!

It’s all about caring for each other and helping everyone in our community to stay healthy.
