it’s water week!
Hi greenthumbs. It’s dirtgirl here! This week we’re jumping into the wonderful world of WATER.
Together, we’re going to learn about the amazing water cycle and where rain comes from. And we’re going to find out how to look after and save our precious water.
For something to do inside, you can make your own water cycle spinner and water saving poster. And you can listen to my Nature Detective podcast as we investigate clouds! Then it’s time to dance to ‘gumboot boogie’ and sing along to ‘every little drop’.
In our Love Food Club, we’re making yummy iced teas, fruity and floral infused waters, and super cool ice blocks. And on my blog for kids, you can make your own recycled watering can.
So are you ready to get grubby? Let’s get waterwise!

Water is amazing. It also has a scientific name: H2O. Next time you want a glass of water, you can ask for a glass of H2O!

wonderful water
What is water and where does it come from? Did you know that we don’t make water. It came with the planet. Water is ancient. We are drinking the same water that the dinosaurs drank. Amazing!
There is so much to know about water and how to handle water with care.

get water wise
The first step to becoming waterwise is to understand where water comes from! Let’s learn more about the water cycle!
Water goes on a journey — the clouds burst and the rain falls; then flows into the creeks and rivers and soaks into the earth creating ground water. Ground water trickles into the creeks and rivers and helps to keep them flowing, even during drought.
Water is heated by the sun and turns into vapour that rises into the sky and makes clouds. When the clouds are very heavy with vapour, they rain. Amazing!
Every living thing needs water to survive. Water has been filling the clouds and falling back to the Earth again as rain for millions of years. This is called the water cycle, an amazing water cycle.
I've got a great idea. Let's explore about our natural water cycle. There are some super big words to learn and say and new facts to discover. Are you ready for the challenge?
You can print this page, colour it in, and make your own water cycle spinner!

sing and dance
with the gumboot boogie!
Here’s something to sing when it rains, when you’ve got your gumboots on and when it’s time to go outside and get puddle jumping!
‘gumboot boogie’ is the perfect song for all those things! You can find the song words below.

make, discover, create!
Saving water and caring for the water we have are two of my favourite things…every little drop of water is precious.
You can make a poster with a clever water saving slogan to remind your family to save water. What about ‘don’t be a drip!’ or ‘water savers rock!’?
Watch this video to see what ideas scrapboy and I came up with (and we share our favourite tips for saving water too!).
Discover more about water!
Here’s a poem I wrote for you! Maybe you could write a poem about the sea too!

sing every little drop
“I looove the sound of rain on the roof. Tomorrow will be a great day for puddles!” — dirtgirl

colour and listen
Here’s something to colour in about water when the world was formed!
Now it’s time to listen to my Nature Detective Academy kids’ podcast. Can you guess who our special guest is today?! This episode is called ‘Cloud’ and goes for about 6 minutes.
Keep an ear out for my song ‘every little drop’.

water warrior tips
The story of water is amazing. The water cycle is an incredible gift from nature for all life on this planet.
Caring for water and treating it like a precious gift is our way of saying thankyou…and it’s our way of making sure that clean drinkable water will still be here for every person, living creature and plant for thousands of years to come.
Right now (and rightly so), we are using more water than we used to to wash our hands properly. So let’s get super smart about the other places we can save water. Here are my top six things to fix!
Also be sure to download the water wise stick ems!
wear your clothes
more than once
Before you pop your clothes in the wash, check that they are actually dirty. It’s ok to wear them again if they look and smell clean!
have speedy
showers
Showers use a lot less water than baths. See if you can shower in under 4 minutes! You could use an egg-timer so you know when to get out!
reuse your
bath water
Share your bath water with your plants by scooping it up with buckets and putting it on your plants and trees.
turn off the tap when
you brush your teeth
This can save up to 5 litres of water from going down the drain!
clean your bike
with a bucket
a top tip from scrapboy…you can save water by using a bucket and sponge to wash your bike, instead of spraying it with a hose.
be a drip
detective!
Can you hear a dripping sound!? Use your ears to investigate where it’s coming from and be a water warrior by tightening the tap!

love food club
In our Love Food Club, we’re making things out of rain juice!!! Super cool ice blocks, delicious iced teas, and refreshing fruity and floral infused waters to sip on…yum yum!

good news
Two teenage girls have helped give clean water to thousands of people through making and selling origami! Isabelle and Katherine Adams are the masterminds behind Paper for Water which pays for clean water projects around the world. Together, the sisters have raised over $1.5 million from selling their origami creations!
