It’s my birthday! (and World Soil Day)

Hi greenthumbs! Guess what?! It’s my birthday on 5th December!! Woohoo! So to celebrate we’re having a watermelon party!!

But first, did you know there’s another special day on 5th December?! Yes, it’s World Soil Day. And I think that’s just great because everyone knows that I LOVE soil and dirt. That’s why my name is dirtgirl! So that’s two things to celebrate on the same day!

World Soil Day

World Soil Day is an annual awareness day run by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

Soil is important for all life on our planet. It helps plants and trees grow by providing them with nutrients, water and minerals. Soil is home to millions of insects, bacteria and small animals!

One of the main ways that you can look after soil is to put your kitchen scraps in a compost or worm farm (or your food and organics bin with the green lid, if you have one!). If you can do this, your food scraps will break down into beautiful compost and the nutrients will go back into our soil!

Watch this short video to see how you can be part of the soil solution! It’s surprising how many things we can do to help look after our soil!

If you want to put your nature detective hat on, you can find some fun kid’s soil experiments on the World Soil Day website.

party time!!

Now, back to the party!! Have you ever thrown a watermelon party?! It’s so much fun and a super good idea for when the weather is hot! You could have a watermelon party at your house too!

One idea is to make a watermelon pizza like this one! It’s so delicious and you don’t even have to cook it!

You could also make watermelon fruit people with your favourite fruit!

nature crown

Dressing up for a party is all part of the fun (we love to dress up in dirtgirlworld!). You could make your own nature crown like this one! Look at scrapboy. He is super excited! He collected these leaves on a nature walk and used an old piece of cardboard. It didn’t cost a cent! costa the garden gnome had a great idea too! He told us that when this crown eventually gets too old to wear anymore, we can just put it in the compost and it will break down to help make healthy soil. Yes!! That’s a hat that gives back!

If you love to dance like me, you can also check out my watermelon party playlist on Spotify!

So greenthumbs…are you in?! Are you going to have a watermelon party at your house?

I would love to see your photos! You can share your photos on social media and tag #dirtgirlworld #getgrubby. Just make sure you check with your grown-ups first! Different families have different privacy rules and we always respect that.

Bye greenthumbs! And a big happy birthday to anyone else who has a birthday in December!
