Recycle like a rockstar - Week 2 challenge

Hi greenthumbs!

Guess what?!! It’s challenge time!!

How did you go with making your bin labels last week? If you didn’t get a chance to do it yet, print out your free labels and stick them on now!

Are you ready for our week 2 challenge?! Let’s do it!

week 2 challenge
set up a kitchen compost caddy

Your challenge this week is to set up a kitchen compost caddy (if you don't already have one). This is the container that you put your food scraps in for your compost, worm farm or green bin.

You can buy one from the shops or you could use a recycled icecream container. The most important thing is that it has a lid to keep the flies out.

You can line your kitchen caddy with newspaper or you can buy special compostable bag liners. Or you can just use it without a liner and give it a good wash each time you empty it. Never use plastic bags as they can’t be composted.

If you want to use newspaper, you could try making an origami bin liner out of old newspaper. Here are some instructions from Reusable Nation.

What’s this got to do with recycling? Well, it’s food recycling! If you recycle your food scraps by putting them in your compost, worm farm or green bin, it will turn into compost full of amazing nutrients. And this can be used to help grow more food! It’s a cycle! And a great way to REcycle.

Good luck greenthumbs! I’ll see you next week for round 3 of our recycle like a rockstar challenge!
