Solstice celebrations (make a lantern!)
Hi greenthumbs!
Did you know it’s the solstice on 22 December?! If you’re in the southern hemisphere, it’s the summer solstice which is the longest day of the year. It’s also called ‘midsummer’.
If you’re in the northern hemisphere, it’s the opposite. It’s the winter solstice which is the longest night of the year (also called ‘midwinter’). It’s all to do with how our earth rotates and whether your side of the planet is tilting towards the sun or not.
The word solstice comes from the Latin word ‘sol’ which means sun, and ‘sistere’ which means to stand still. The solstice is such a beautiful time to celebrate with your own special traditions!
make a solstice lantern
One of my favourite ways to celebrate the solstice is to make a solstice lantern! This is a special family activity that you can do at home.
Here are some of my favourite lantern ideas. You will need to ask your grown-ups for help. Just take care if you are using real candles.
in other news … we’re heading to Woodford Folk Festival!
Right now, scrapboy and I packing are bags in preparation for the Woodford Folk festival, which is a magical family loving festival on Jinibara Country. We are so excited to be going!
We will be live streaming a special family New Year’s Eve, Happy Saturday celebration at 5.30pm from the Stardust theatre.
Flash back … Remember when were at Woodfordia for Bushtime, making nature crowns? This is something you could do to celebrate the solstice at home.
