Solstice celebrations for kids

Hi greenthumbs!

This weekend it’s the solstice! This means it will be the shortest or the longest day of the year, depending on where you live.

If you live in the Southern Hemisphere like me, it’s the Winter solstice on Sunday 21 June. This is the shortest day of the year (and the longest night!). It’s also called ‘midwinter’.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the opposite! It’s the Summer solstice is on Saturday 20 June. This is the longest day of the year (and the shortest night). It’s also called ‘midsummer’.

People all over the world celebrate the solstice in different ways. At home in dirtgirlworld, scrapboy and I will be making a solstice lantern and drinking warm spiced apple tea. Then we’re going to make a tent and tell our favourite stories!

Do you have a solstice family tradition? Maybe you could start one! Here are some ideas of things to do.

Winter solstice ideas

Cook some soup and share it

Have a campfire outdoors or sit by the fire inside

Have your favourite warm drink

Take a winter solstice walk

Here are some more ideas of things to do!

Summer solstice ideas
