Get buzzy for World Bee Day
Hi greenthumbs. It’s dirtgirl here!
World Bee Day is on 20 May, so we are getting dressed up in yellow to celebrate! Bees make delicious honey of course, but they are also really important for the health of our planet. They are one of the world’s best pollinators! And that means they help our plants and food grow. A third of all of the food we eat relies on bees for pollination.
So bees might be tiny, but they are marvellous and mighty!
And now, I’m going to let you in on a bee secret. Are you ready? It’s called the waggle dance!
what’s the waggle dance?
The waggle dance is a code that bees use to communicate with each other and find the flowers. What?! Amazing, I know! Let’s find out more with two of our nature detectives and Cedar from Flow. Click on the picture to watch.
Let’s grow a pollinator highway?
get buzzy!
So greenthumbs, are you ready to dress up in yellow and get buzzy with us?!
bees need our help!
You can help care for our bees by planting more of the flowering plants that bees love…find your free bee-friendly garden plants guide below.
Your family can also help our buzzy insects by not using chemicals pesticides on the garden (because sprays can harm bees and other helpful insects).
You can also help by buying local honey at your local farmers’ markets! Yum, yum!
