Castle challenge (Go Wild for Maths!)
Hi greenthumbs.
Have you seen my new TV show called Go Wild for Maths?! You can catch it on ABC iview. Each episode of Go Wild for Maths has a wild nature challenge to do. And one of these challenges is to build a sandcastle. Sculpt sand to build a castle fit for a crabby sea ruler!
This is a fun family activity to do at the beach.
What you need
Buckets and spades
Molds like containers, cups and funnels
Carving tools like spatulas and melon ballers
Shells and stones
Bucket of water
A camera

There’s no one way to do this challenge, but here are some ideas to get you started.
Choose a good site for your castle construction, where it won’t get washed away!
2. Make a firm base in the shape of a circle by building it up with sand. Pour some water onto it and pack it all down firmly with your hands.
3. Fill up a bucket with sand and a little bit of water. Mix it with your hands and pack it down. Then tip it upside down on the base to make the main part of your castle. Keep adding different shapes to your castle using your molds.
4. Once you have built your castle, add some details like windows and stairs using your tools. A melon baller makes lovely round windows! Decorate it with shells and stones. Use your imagination.
5. Don’t forget to snap a photo of your castle!
6. When you’ve finished, remember to pack up all your things and take them home with you.

For sandcastles, a good ratio of sand to water is 8 parts sand to 1 part water.
