Clock challenge (Go Wild for Maths!)

Hi greenthumbs. It’s dirtgirl here!

I have another Go Wild for Maths challenge for you! I challenge you to make a nature clock with Costa the garden gnome. Costa says “find the time to make a rock clock and change the way you see the day!”

watch the clock episode

Watch the ‘clock’ episode on ABC iview to see how to make a nature clock. This is such a fun nature activity to do at the beach or in your backyard.

What you need

Now it’s your turn! Before you go outside, you’ll need to gather the following things:

A basket or bag (to collect your sticks and stones)

Chalk

A camera

3 cards with a time question written on each, like “What time is bedtime?”, “What time is lunchtime?” or “What time does school start?”.

what to collect outside

Now it’s time to go outside and find these things:

One short stick for the hour hand

One long stick for the minute hand

12 rocks to make the numbers of the clock

make your clock

There’s no one way to do this challenge, but here are some ideas to get you started!

  1. Choose a flat spot on the ground. Using the chalk, write a number on each rock from numbers 1 to 12.

  2. Arrange your stones in the shape of a circle to make the numbers on the clock. Remember, 12 goes at the top!

  3. Place your two sticks in the circle to make the two hands of the clock. You might need to move the stones so they fit.

  4. Pick a time card. Move the hands on the clock to give your answer and show the time this happens in your day. Say the time out loud. Pick another card and go again!

  5. Don’t forget to snap a photo of your nature clock!

  6. When you’ve finished, wash the numbers off the stones with some water. Carefully put your sticks and stones back in nature where you found them.

did you know?

People first worked out how to keep track of the time by watching the sun. The Ancient Egyptians used simple sundials to tell the time.
