Nest challenge (Go Wild for Maths!)

Hi greenthumbs. It’s dirtgirl here!

It’s Go Wild for Maths challenge time! I challenge you to make a nature nest. Think like a bird and use what you find around you to weave a nest!

watch the nest episode

Watch the ‘nest’ episode on ABC iview to see how to make a nest.

what you need to gather

Before you start, gather the following things:

A basket or fabric bag to collect your nature objects

An egg…this could be a real boiled egg or a toy egg

Scissors

Raffia or yarn

A camera

what to collect outside

Now it’s time to go outside and collect these things in nature:

Sticks and twigs that bend

Long grasses, leaves and bark

Feathers

how to make your nest

  1. Find a comfortable spot to sit and build your nest. Using the bendy sticks, build a circular-shaped frame for your nest. You could use some long pieces of grass or raffia to tie your sticks together.

2. Add layers to your nest with lots of grass, bark and little twigs. Check that your nest is strong enough to hold an egg.

3. Decorate your nest with soft things like leaves and feathers.

4. Place your egg gently inside the nest.

5. Don’t forget to snap a photo of your bird’s nest!

6. When you’re finished, find a nice spot in nature to put your nest. Maybe up in some branches or a sheltered spot on the ground. Or you can take your nest home with you for safekeeping.

fun fact

Some birds stick their nests together with things like spider’s web, caterpillar cocoons and even mud!
