DIY seed bombs

Hi greenthumbs!

Have you ever made a seed bomb? A seed bomb is a little ball of compost, clay and seeds! You can throw them anywhere and, after it rains, they will grow! It’s a clever and secret way to grow seeds! Seed bombs are lots of fun to make, and they’re a great gift to give to your family and friends. Here is my secret seed bomb recipe.

What you need

1 cup of compost

The compost should be nice and fine, so you might need to shake it through a sieve before you start. If you don’t have any compost, you could use organic potting mix or seed raising mix.

1 cup of clay

You can find clay at art and craft stores. Look for a natural, non-toxic clay powder. Red clay powder is a good one.

1 tablespoon of seeds

Try seeds like dill, rocket, cornflower, orange cosmos and sunflowers. Small seeds are best!

How to make a seed bomb

  1. Find a big bowl and measuring cup that can get grubby!

  2. Mix your compost, clay and seeds together.

  3. Add a little bit of water, so it’s moist enough to stick together (a bit like playdough). If it gets too wet, you can add a little more compost and clay.

  4. Roll your mixture into small balls about 2-3cm wide and pop them on a tray lined with old newspaper.

  5. Leave your seed bombs to dry for 1-2 days.

    Let’s go seed bombing!

Now for the fun part!!! Pop your seed bombs in your pocket or a basket and throw them wherever you want them to grow! A good time to throw them is just before you know it’s going to rain. Check the weather report!

After it rains, keep an eye on your seed bombs over the next week or so. The seeds should start to germinate and grow! Or you can water them to give your seed bombs a head start. Soon you’ll have secret plants popping up all over the place! Surprise!!!

Give a gift of seeds

Seed bombs also make a beautiful gift for family and friends. You can make a big batch of them, so you have them ready for birthdays. Just store them in an airtight container with a lid. Here are some ideas that I just love.

What do you think? Are you going to share the seed bomb love?!

Happy seed bombing greenthumbs!
