World Ocean Day 2021

Hi greenthumbs. It’s dirtgirl here! Are you ready to dive into the deep blue sea?

It’s World Ocean Day on 8 June. On this day, people all around our blue planet celebrate and honour our big shared ocean, that connects us all.

About 70% of our planet is covered by oceans. And 70% of the oxygen we breathe is made by plants in the ocean! That’s incredible.

Oceans are so important, and they are beautiful. There is so much left to discover. Our oceans are full of mystery and wonder. We look after our oceans and protect them.

what are your favourite marine animals?

Our oceans are home to amazing animals like whales, sharks, sea turtles, fish, octopus and sea birds. The ocean is their home!

What are your favourite marine creatures?

My favourite creatures are dugongs, manta rays and seahorses!

Common seahorses usually travel in pairs. They like to live in different types of ocean habitat including seagrass beds and mangroves.

Did you know?

Did you know that the planet’s biggest living thing is in the ocean? It's called the Great Barrier Reef (which is just off the coast of Queensland, Australia). It’s full of beautiful coral and amazing ocean animals. And it’s so big it can be seen from outer space!

how do you love our oceans?

Do you live near the ocean or far away? What do you love to do when you visit the ocean? Do you swim or surf? Do you explore rockpools and look for tiny creatures? Do you spot dolphins and whales passing by?! Or do you build sandcastles?

dirtgirl’s book club

Here are 3 of my favourite ocean books. Have you read any of these? Click on the picture to find out how to buy them online or ask your local bookstore. Or better still, ask your library if they have them! Borrowing books rocks!

share your ocean photo!

I would love to see your ocean photos!!! Share your last photo of the beach or the ocean with the hashtags #dirtgirlworld #connect #love. Let’s fill the world with ocean love!

Happy World Oceans Day greenthumbs! Always remember that we are caretakers of our amazing oceans. We take care together!
