National Tree Day

Hi greenthumbs!

National Tree Day is coming up on Sunday 2 August … and I’m super excited!! Schools Tree Day is on Friday 31 July too, so it’s going to be a gigantic week of tree love!

I’m an official ambassador for National Tree Day. I know that sounds like a fancy pants title, but it means I get to talk about something that I LOVE with people all around the planet. Trees are amazing. They make oxygen for us to breathe, they grow yummy food for us to eat and they provide a home for so many animals.

National Tree Day was co-founded in 1996 by Planet Ark and Olivia Newton-John. It’s now Australia's biggest community tree planting event. Since it started, over 25 million trees have been planted by almost 5 million volunteers in schools and communities across Australia. Wow!

This year, we’re celebrating National Tree Day a little differently. We’re not getting together in groups to plant trees. But we’re still going to have a ‘treemendous’ celebration!

Calling all tree-huggers!

I challenge you to #HugATreeForNTD

We’re calling on EVERYONE to hug a tree for National Tree Day. Share a photo of yourself hugging or caring for your favourite tree, house plant or garden with the hashtags #HugATreeForNTD and #dirtgirlworld.

I’m pretty excited about this one! Be silly, be funny and most of all, love your trees!

It’s going to be a big tree love fest!

Other ways to celebrate

You could plant a tree in your own backyard.

Or you could bring some plants indoors.

Or you could start a veggie patch.

At home in dirtgirlworld, I’ll be doing all three. Yep … I’ve told scrapboy we REALLY need to build another veggie patch. Can you ever have too many? Not in my world!

Seedling bank

Something else really cool about National Tree Day is the Seedling Bank. This ‘bank’ gives money to schools and community groups in Australia to help them buy native seedlings to plant. In the Northern Rivers NSW, near Lismore (just a hop, skip and a jump away from dirtgirlworld), the crew at Wilsons River Landcare have been able to restore precious subtropical rainforest thanks to the seedling bank. Volunteer tree planters rock! To make a donation to the seedling bank or to find out how your school or community group can apply for a grant visit the website

A little bird told me that the 2020 Research Report - Regenerating: Our Land, Our People, Our Future has been released! This is something that your parents or carers might like to read. It talks about practical things that we can do to help regenerate ourselves and our environment.
